The use case EU Taxonomy & ESG meets the requirements of the EU Taxonomy framework – which have been in force since 2020. The EU Taxonomy applies to all economic activities related to building, renovating and trading in real estate. 

The EU Taxonomy requires each project to make a significant contribution to one environmental objective without causing significant harm to the other environmental objectives. 

Green assets appreciate in value and receive better financing terms, while non-green assets are at risk of declining value and higher financing costs. Compliance with the EU Taxonomy is also a key element of ESG reporting.

EU Taxonomy: A Framework for sustainable activities
The EU Taxonomy is a comprehensive regulatory framework and classification system for sustainable and green activities defined by the EU Commission aligned with the net zero trajectory by 2050 and additional environmental goals beyond climate. The framework consists out of the following six environmental objectives: 

  • Climate Mitigation
  • Adaptation to Climate Change
  • Sustainable use and protection of water and marine resources
  • Transition to a circular economy
  • Pollution prevention and control and 
  • Protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems.
Multilevel Criterias for EU Taxonomy
The EU Taxonomy defines a transparent and specific combination set of basic screening and fulfillment criteria for sustainable economic activities:

  • First of all, activities have to make a substantial contribution to at least one of the six environmental objectives. 
  • Further on do no significant harm to any of the other five environmental objectives. 
  • While comply with minimum safeguards and the applicable technical screening criteria.
