The BILLA family's 'greenest BILLA' in Vienna's Pilotengasse is a multi-award-winning, climate-friendly flagship store and makes an important contribution to the green transformation.

Lighthouse project becomes "greenest" BILLA

BILLA's goal is to offer customers a contemporary shopping experience in all BILLA and BILLA PLUS stores. To achieve this, BILLA continuously invests in the modernization of existing locations, particularly to act in the spirit of climate protection and support the positive energy transition.

Sustainability is a top priority at BILLA and is an integral part of the actions of the entire team. This is reflected in forward-looking product ranges with a focus on regional origins and a broad selection in the plant-based and animal welfare sectors, as well as in stores that are as energy-efficient and resource-conserving as possible.

This is also the case at Pilotengasse 76 in Vienna's 22nd district. The location reopened in early December 2024 and is characterized above all by its energy efficiency, the promotion of biodiversity, and climate-friendly heat reduction measures – which have been officially certified with greenpass GOLD.

+43 trees

In addition to the existing trees, there are 43 new plantings, roof and facade greening, and much more.

76% water permeable

More than 3/4 of the BILLA property is a permeable area and counteracts sealing

Multiple awards

The renovation of the retail branch was assessed and certified by greenpass for its environmental impact and climate resilience. The sustainable construction relies on certified timber construction materials from Austria, renewable energy, and the promotion of electromobility at the site. In addition, there are extensive greening elements according to the new BILLA Greening Manual. These include effective shade trees, a biodiversity-promoting natural meadow, green facades, solar green roof, and PV-covered and shaded parking areas.

Green and ecological stores according to greenpass standard

The retail group pursues the concept of green and ecological stores according to the greenpass quality standard. A digital twin is created for each location and analyzed, evaluated, and optimized using microclimate simulation with more than 50 meaningful key performance indicators (KPIs), covering six urban challenges (climate, water, air, biodiversity, energy, and costs) and four additional bonus categories (ecology, circularity, social, and mobility). The results are then officially certified and verified.

Sustainability, regionality, and climate resilience are top priorities at REWE and BILLA and are a key contribution to the green transformation of our stores into climate-fit stores. Thanks to greenpass, we can adapt our properties to climate change in a climate-proof and evidence-based manner. At Pilotengasse, we use certified wood construction materials sourced exclusively from Austrian companies, design open-sided outdoor areas, and implement comprehensive measures to increase biodiversity and reduce heat, as well as to promote renewable energy and electromobility.

greenpass GOLD for Pilotengasse

Like a passport for people, the greenpass serves as an official certification document. The greenpass transparently summarizes the climate resilience and sustainability of real estate and their open space.

After successful optimization, the climate-fit flagship project in Pilotgasse achieved a certification level of 82% and thus greenpass GOLD. In addition to the greenpass Certification, the multi-award-winning project has also been certified with ÖGNI/DGNB Platinum, klima:aktiv GOLD, and GreenBuilding.

Sustainable and climate-resilient impact

The greenpass impact graphic summarizes the project's most important impacts, translated into everyday comparisons. The graphic is displayed alongside the official certificate in the checkout area of each certified store to actively communicate the measures and their impacts to visitors.

The Billa supermarket on Pilotengasse counteracts soil sealing with 76% of its site being permeable or water-permeable. The use of infiltration basins and green infrastructure allows for effective water storage and infiltration. This allows for the regular storage of approximately 12,000 bathtubs filled with water. The project provides good thermal comfort (Physiological Equivalent Temperature - PET) on hot days.

When modernizing or building new stores, we focus, wherever possible, on measures that have a positive impact on our climate and meet the greenpass standard. This allows us to implement effective measures to adapt our existing stores and new plans to be climate-friendly, making an important contribution to promoting biodiversity and protecting our livelihoods.

The plants used, including 22 newly planted trees, green pergolas, and green roofs and facades, add up to a leaf area equivalent to approximately one football field or 0.7 hectares. A species-rich flower meadow, bee and bird pastures, and nesting sites specifically promote biodiversity. The vegetation on the property removes approximately 6.5 t of CO₂ from the air annually. This corresponds to approximately 40,435 kilometers driven (average car diesel consumption).

In addition to the use of sustainable and recycled building materials, the project makes an important contribution to renewable energy generation. The photovoltaic system has a total output of 141 kWp, which could supply more than 32 households (4-person household) with electricity per year (4,440 kWh per household).

What is the point of all this?

So what's the point of all this? The Impact Book summarizes the many impacts and translates them into everyday comparisons and relationships.

Conclusion

The project demonstrates that climate protection, climate change adaptation, and biodiversity can be effectively considered in retail for a successfull transformation and that their quality can be officially confirmed multiple times with renowned certifications, including the greenpass for climate resilience.
