How BILLA is transforming its retail stores into climate-proof and green stores with the help of greenpass.

Retail in transition

Climate change and sustainability are becoming increasingly important in our society and are also essential in the context of achieving national climate goals. Sustainability is a top priority at BILLA and a central component of the entire team's actions. As a partner in the climate-active pact, BILLA is committed to reducing its CO₂ emissions and taking significant measures to achieve this. The retailer has set itself the goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2040 and is also committed to protecting nature and promoting biodiversity.

Protecting the climate of the store network and promoting sustainable construction methods are thus becoming a focus, while also having a positive impact on the well-being of customers and employees. BILLA's goal is to offer customers a contemporary shopping experience in all BILLA and BILLA PLUS stores.

Green and ecological stores according to greenpass standard

The retail group pursues the concept of green and ecological markets according to the greenpass quality standard. A digital twin is created for each location and, using microclimate simulation, is analyzed, evaluated, and optimized using more than 50 meaningful Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) based on data across six urban challenges (climate, water, air, biodiversity, energy and costs) and four bonus categories (ecology, circularity, social and mobility).

Depending on its performance, a project earns climate resilience points and is officially certified with the green pass for real estate.

Measures and impact optimization

For the green stores, there is a comprehensive catalog of effective climate protection and climate adaptation measures for buildings and open spaces, such as shade trees, hedges, green roofs and facades, near-natural flower meadows, unsealed and shaded parking lots, photovoltaics, the use of wood as a raw material, and much more. The measures are applied to the stores depending on their location and conditions and are optimized and certified with greenpass for their use and effectiveness.

Further information on the measures implemented by the green stores can also be found on the official BILLA green store page.

Green Stores

Transparent communication of impact

The greenpass impact graphic summarizes the most important impacts of the green markets and translates them into understandable everyday comparisons.

Green markets are an important measure for active climate and nature conservation and have a positive impact on the well-being of customers and employees, as well as on the preservation of biodiversity. With greenpass, we can optimize the impact of green markets to achieve our climate and corporate goals.

The graphic, along with the official certificate, is physically displayed in the checkout area of the green markets to actively communicate the measures and their effects to visitors and customers, as well as in compliance with EU requirements (Green Claim Directive).

Conclusion

In summary, the retail industry is undergoing change and is increasingly addressing the issues of climate change and sustainability. The BILLA retail group is committed to the concept of green and ecological stores based on the greenpass quality standard. Through data-based analysis and optimization using microclimate simulation, locations are evaluated and certified for climate, water, air, biodiversity, energy, and costs, as well as further bonus categories.

With now over 40 certified stores in Austria, BILLA's green stores are actively contributing to the climate-fit transformation of retail. Through transparent communication of measures and impact performance, the public is also informed about the importance of sustainable and climate-resilient action. Green stores are therefore not only an important measure for climate and nature conservation, but also for the well-being of customers and employees, as well as the preservation of biodiversity. With the greenpass, BILLA is setting an example for a greener and more sustainable future in retail.
